CANADA – US – Landstar Systems Incorporated, based in Jacksonville , Florida have expressed their desire to create a multimodal hub at Windsor Airport. The proposed site is 150 acres of land adjacent to both the airport and rail tracks. Landstar, who this week moved up one place in the Inbound Logistics Top 10 3PL Excellence Awards Survey, are reported as disappointed by recent delays when clearing shipments through other Canadian freight centres.

Windsor Airport has marketed itself as an ideal location for freight operations with its proximity to Detroit, Michigan and excellent road and rail connections. Long term Mayor of Windsor, Eddie Francis, will make a formal announcement today but with Lufthansa Consulting also formally investigating the development of a freight village on the 2,000 or so acres of available land surrounding the airport further development seems imminent.

Windsor is geographically in an ideal location for cross border traffic and Landstar, a supply chain expert with its asset light profile and employing over 1,400 agents shipping internationally may have spotted an area ripe for growth in what are still fairly austere times. Since taking over control three years ago from Serco the management group, Your Quick Gateway Inc., have transformed the fortunes of the once ailing airport.
