UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – The ANL Australia, seized here by the authorities on the 15th August has been found to be carrying North Korean-manufactured munitions, detonators, explosives and rocket-propelled grenades bound for Iran. An Australian Ministry Official stated today that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are investigating the circumstances surrounding the Bahamian registered cargo ships detection and subsequent detention.

Feelings are running high about this incident, particularly in the US where the conspiracy theorists are already beginning to circle. Former President Clinton’s visit to P’yongyang earlier this month had been hailed a success following the release of two journalists held by North Korean authorities, and, just a week or so ago a diplomatic mission from the country was welcomed by the Governor of New Mexico in a persistent effort to improve diplomatic relations. Whispers of Chinese and Italian involvement also fuel the rumours.

The UAE only admitted to the find aboard the Australian owned vessel within the last 24 hours but had already apparently told the authorities in P’yongyang and Tehran of their discovery. Officials in Australia are investigating their responsibilities under the terms of UN Security Council resolutions to prosecute anyone breaching the illicit shipment of weapons.

This saga continues, meanwhile that of the Mu San, the North Korean vessel seized off the coast of India, also remains unresolved.
