AUSTRIA – GERMANY – GEORGIA – Gebrüder Weiss, the main freight forwarding and logistics subsidiary of Lauterach, Austria headquartered Gebrüder Weiss Holding AG, continues to unify some existing acquisitions whilst acquiring new ones. In the past few days the group has announced that, following last year’s complete takeover of Germany’s Diehl forwarding operation it is to rebrand the acquisition as Gebrüder Weiss GmbH & Co. KG as of 1 January 2014.

All existing buildings, in Esslingen, Untermünkheim and Wernau, will soon sport the orange colour scheme used by the parent company and obviously all documentation will be reorganised. As vehicles are replaced the German outfit’s new trucks will be similarly treated. Gebrüder Weiss and Diehl have been cooperating since the 1990s. In 2010, GW acquired a 25% share, with the complete takeover occurring in April 2012. Roland Gander, Regional Manager West at Gebrüder Weiss, commented:

“In the last two years, we have made large investments in technology, quality and equipment in the new locations. We now offer all of our company’s services in the Stuttgart area. Nationally, our customers benefit from the well-established transport routes as part of the System Alliance Europe network. Internationally, we can cover numerous destinations with our company’s own international subsidiaries. We also work with selected local freight forwarders where necessary.”

A majority of the 162 Gebrüder Weiss sites are located between Basel and Tbilisi, Georgia, where GW opened a strategically important terminal in September and has now reinforced its policy of expansion in to the Caucasus by confirming and agreement reached at the end of November which sees the acquisition of Far Freight Speditions- und Handelsgesellschaft m.b.H., a company specialising in transport to and from the CIS and Caucasus countries, for an undisclosed sum.

The Austrian freight forwarder Far Freight has its headquarters in Vienna and also has a branch in Naberezhnye Chelny, Russia. Formed in 1995, founder and previous owner Peter Gindl will remain as Managing Director, With an operative focus on land transport, the Far Freight team will help Gebrüder Weiss to expand its service, particularly in countries such as Turkmenistan, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the Southern Federal District (Russia). The two companies have already conducted joint projects in the past in various regions of Central Asia. The twenty current employees, as well as the Far Freight company name will be kept, but judging by previous experience, it will only be a matter of time before that orange logo starts to spring up further East.
