CALAIS - A report today from a professional security site states that bandits are now attacking vehicles en route to the French port of Calais using tactics reminiscent of the unlit roads of the early 18th Century.

The robbers are reported to utilise the simple tactic of standing in the middle of the road assuming that human nature will result in the driver having to stop. The tactic is believed to have failed in that at least one would be attacker has recently been run down by a frightened car driver when he realised the man’s intentions. Apparently a more recent tactic of forming a “human chain” across the road has failed dismally as drivers can deduce the intent of the would be thieves more easily.

The problem seems to have arisen from the large number of asylum seekers who are living rough outside the French town, many of whom are waiting for a chance to travel to the UK. Armed generally with knives, desperation drives the trend and demands serious and prompt attention from the authorities.

Police advice to truckers and others on the route to Calais port is to continue to drive determinedly but at a reasonable speed toward the potential attack giving the impression that stopping is not an option. Should the action of halting the vehicle be successful drivers should ensure all doors and windows are locked and immediately call the police.

Readers are reminded that the European emergency number is 112 from their mobile ‘phones.
