KYRGYZISTAN – A new road that is being funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is set to be completed in the next few months that will provide the first all-weather road link between the north and south of the country.

Linking the capital Bishkek to the city of Osh in the south and following old camel trading routes the new 650km road has to pass through two mountain passes that have up until now been impassable in the winter. The new route will allow year round transport to be possible.

The project is one of a number that the ADB is funding to improve transport infrastructure throughout Asia, with the organisation also financing the rehabilitation of the road from Almaty in Kazakhstan to Bishkek and developing plans to upgrade a large section of the road from Osh to People's Republic of China.
