UK – Essex based Servowatch Systems is celebrating a ‘double whammy’ this month having just received type approval from classification society Lloyd’s Register for the company’s commercial-off-the-shelf alarm, monitoring and control system ServoCore which extends the company’s range of management systems for the merchant fleet and is suitable for all shipping sectors including bulk carriers, containerships, tankers, passenger ships, offshore support vessels, tugs and salvage vessels, inland waterway and small leisure craft.

Approval for the new product follows the successful type approval in July of ServoSentinel, the company’s advanced embedded computer module for marine applications where more extensive system integration and platform management is required. Successful type approval of the computer module was crucial to Servowatch receiving Lloyd’s Register certification for the ServoCore solution. Servowatch, a business unit of the Electrical & Automation division of India’s Larsen & Toubro, adapted the technology inherent to its bespoke automation and integration solutions supplied to the naval sector to meet the commercial requirements of the merchant shipping industry with a ‘plug and play’ product.

The new product achieved instant success when it was announced last year with an order from South Korea’s Dae Sun Shipbuilding & Engineering which requested ServoCore for three 17,500 tonne multi-purpose cargo ships then under construction. Wayne Ross, Chief Executive Officer, Servowatch Systems, said:

“To have received Lloyd’s Register type approval for both systems in the space of just four weeks is a remarkable achievement for Servowatch. Not only does it mark an important step forward in the development of systems automation and integration for the merchant ship sector, it also gives shipowners the confidence needed to benefit from high-end system integration without the high costs.

“The development of ServoCore means that we can deliver the same functionality and flexibility as our tailor-made ServoFusion range but for significantly less investment, making it a more commercially attractive alarm, monitoring and control option to operators of standard tonnage.”
