Rail Freight Yard Tragedy

Fatality highlights flaws in security once again

UK - A 13-year-old boy has died after being electrocuted at a rail freight depot in Allerton, Liverpool.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: “We received reports that three youths had been seen in the depot and had been on the roof of a disused freight train.

“It would appear the boys have come into close proximity with the overhead cable and the electricity arced.

“Two other boys suffered superficial injuries only and are currently being treated at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool. We don't believe anyone else was involved in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.”

The accident occurs at a time when the number of incidents of children playing in stock yards and on tracks is increasing, prompting demands for increased security at these facilities throughout the UK.
