Teardrops Make Drinks That Much Greener

UK – Tradeteam, the specialist drinks delivery arm of DHL’s freight related activities, says it is the first brewery logistics company to invest in ‘Teardrop’ designed trailers to enhance the efficiency of its fleet. The investment in sixty of the new streamlined trailers follows the addition last year of one hundred and thirteen teardrop trailers to Tradeteam’s Primary Distribution fleet, as part of its company-wide Go Green commitment.

Focusing on short deliveries to inner city and town locations, the new trailers are expected to produce a two per cent fuel saving per year, over an average of 50,000 miles. In addition to the trailer’s swooping, streamlined roof which improves fuel efficiency, the new design eradicates an industry-wide design flaw by reducing the gap between the tractor and trailer which allows air to eddy in front of the trailer, increasing drag.

Matt Crampton, Finance Director at Tradeteam, commented that the firm was delighted with the investment saying:

“The new trailers were part of our staged upgrade process, we wanted to extend the success of our primary distribution teardrops trailers to our secondary distribution network. Our trailers have a longer lifespan than the tractors we operate so it’s important to make the right choice, and the design is not just eye catching, it decreases drag and increases efficiency - something we’re looking to achieve across all our operations.”

Tradeteam is the biggest drinks distributor in Britain with a turnover exceeding £160 million and picking over 50 million items per annum to complete orders. The company’s 99.88% accuracy record has helped it to win several prestigious haulage awards.
