Maersk Speaks Out on Effect of Cyber Intrusion on its IT Systems as MSC Helps Out

DENMARK – WORLDWIDE – AP Moller Maersk has released an update on the state of its IT systems following the recent cyber-attack known as 'Petya', confirming that the issue remains contained, with the shipping behemoth continuing to work towards technical recovery. A number of IT systems have been deliberately shut down across multiple sites and select business units, also impacting email systems. Maersk says that business continuity plans are being implemented and prioritised, with Maersk Line once again able to accept bookings. In a statement, Maersk said:

“We continue to assess the situation. Until this analysis is complete, we cannot be specific about how many sites and locations are affected or when normal business operations are restored. The aggregate impact on our business is being assessed. Our focus is on ensuring the best business continuity possible for our customers and business partners. We are collaborating with IT experts including national cyber-crime agencies and IT industry leaders, to reinstate services safely and without further disruption.”

Maersk entities Maersk Oil, Maersk Drilling, Maersk Supply Services, Maersk Tankers, Maersk Training, Svitzer and Maersk Container Industry (MCI) remain operationally unaffected with Maersk Line and subsidiaries APM Terminals and Damco worst hit.

The company has emphasised that all Maersk Line vessels continue to be under control, employees are safe and communication to crew and management on board is functioning. Maersk Line reiterates that it is able to accept bookings again via INTTRA, the world’s largest booking platform.

The majority of the cargo handling terminals are now operational. Some of these terminals are operating slower than usual or with limited functionality as APM Terminals continue to work towards full restoration of its IT systems. Meanwhile Damco has limited access to certain systems. A business continuity plan has been deployed with a key focus on protecting customers cargo flows.

Yesterday, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) offered its full support to its 2M Partner, saying that the two largest container freight firms are working together to find other means to transmit data between the two companies. This includes information such as vessel bay plans, load lists, and customs information. If necessary, the 2M partners are prepared to divert ships away from terminals which are not currently operating as a result of the attack. MSC operates 53 terminals around the world which are fully available to 2M vessels to load and unload cargo with minimal delay.
